Neumann ‘comes home’ for forum

By John Ranallo
September 2, 2010

“It feels like I am coming home,” said Wisconsin gubernatorial hopeful Mark Neumann of his visit to the Beloit Public Library Wednesday.

Neumann, a Republican candidate for governor, was hosting a “freedom forum” in Beloit before heading to Janesville later in the afternoon. The forums allow Neumann to outline his plans for the state and discuss important issues with the public. Among the topics discussed on Wednesday were the economy, education and other items like conceal and carry gun laws and health care.

“I learn a lot at these,” Neumann said minutes before the forum began.

Neumann said he wants to make Wisconsin the best place in the world to do business. To do that, he wants to cut government spending and lower taxes.

Before getting into politics Neumann worked as a math teacher and started his own real estate business. In 1995 he was elected to Congress. If elected governor he promises to remember that “you can’t spend more money than you have.”

As governor Neumann said he would cut property taxes by $12 billion statewide to regrow the economy, transform public education through fundamental reform and allow more local control, and install a program based on the Research Triangle Park of North Carolina that will create 300,000 jobs and attract businesses. The model will partner colleges and businesses and strengthen the economy. Neumann wants to apply the Research Triangle Park statewide with one of the parks being located in the Beloit Janesville area. The idea behind the model is to have college and university campuses partner with the needs of the business world to attract businesses and create jobs.

Neumann also said he is proposing the biggest one-year tax cut in Wisconsin history and has proposed that property owners pay their taxes monthly rather than at the end of a year which will ultimately save money to be spent in the economy.

“If we cut your taxes you all will keep more of your own money,” he said. “When you keep more of your own money there is only two things you can do with it, you can either spend it, and somebody has to provide the goods and services that your buying— that is jobs and job creation— or you could save it and it becomes capital that our businesses need to expand.”

Neumann said fellow gubernatorial candidates Tom Barrett and Scott Walker are career politicians. Neumann said his background as a business owner and teacher will lead him to different approaches than other candidates. Neumann said while the Republican party has endorsed Scott Walker he feels he is best suited for the job and can excel as governor.

“Our backgrounds are completely different,” Neumann said of Walker.

Neumann’s website indicates that he is in favor of signing a conceal carry law, and is against the proposed national health care bill. Neumann is pro-life and a firm believer in constitutional rights. “I think running as the outsider puts me in a position where we will be in a better spot to get this job done,” Neumann said. “Our best days are ahead.”

Neumann also said if elected governor he would scrap construction on the train that will connect Milwaukee and Madison as it will be too costly to build and maintain at this time. Neumann will face fellow republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker in the Sept. 14 primary.

Joe Scarborough: Mark Neumann is a "Rock Star"

user profile image August 30th, 2010 by Chip Englander - Comments (0)

Former Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough called Mark Neumann a "Rock Star," Friday morning on his own national TV show, Morning Joe. Scarborough, who was elected to Congress the same year as Mark in 1994, called Mark a Rock Star because he was a policy expert who could actually dive deep into the budget and cut spending. Rhetoric and slogans are easy. Mark Neumann can actually balance the budget.
