More Taxes in Milwaukee County

user profile image March 9th, 2010 by Mark Neumann - Comments (0)

The Journal Sentinel reports recently that the Milwaukee County Transit System ridership had fallen 9% last year. This is a 35-year low for Milwaukee County.  The ridership is off from over 52 million in 2000 to just over 39 million in 2009, a drop in business of 25%.

In government the conclusion is so different than in small business that it is infuriating to even consider.  Let me quote the responses so as to not misrepresent their ideas.

Mark's Main Street Entourage

user profile image March 1st, 2010 by John Mattek - Comments (0)

What’s it like to be a part of Mark’s Main Street Entourage?

Let me begin by recalling my top three Main Street experiences so far.  Number One was the stop at West Racine Shoe Repair in Racine where Dave, the owner, gave an emotional talk about the state of business in Wisconsin.  Number Two was the Sun Mist Café in Delevan where Lisa surprised Mark and Sue with a beautiful Turkish gift for good luck on the campaign.  Number Three was the Colonial Carriage Works in Columbus where Ryann treated us to a tour of their restoration showroom of horse-drawn carriages that are shipped all over the world.  Wisconsin truly has a variety of wonderful businesses.

Sue's Blog: From 'Main Street' II

Mark and I have been very busy as we continue meeting small business owners on Main Streets across the state. A few weeks ago, we battled the snow – over one foot of it – in Mukwonago and Burlington. My mother and I used to shop in Burlington when I was a little girl. I have fond memories of taking the wide staircase up and down in Montgomery Ward.  It was interesting to see how much has changed; the building that was once Montgomery ward has now become a furniture store! Mark was also able to reminisce on his time living in Mukwonago as a young boy.

By far, the best stop of the day was Bartle’s Jewelry Store. The owner, Steve Bartle, is a former high school classmate of ours. Moreover, other former classmates, Kim and Darrell Koch, saw on the campaign’s website that we’d be in the area and decided to stop by. If you’ll recall, this isn’t the first time the Kochs have met us on Main Street; all of us enjoyed the opportunity to reflect on our days in high school and chat about what our friends are doing now.
